More often than not, we are reminded that there is no place for the old in the new world. However, once we unmask our veil of nostalgia for the past, we are then exposed to the beauty of change in itself.
Through his lens, Imran (@mibz) follows the forgotten path to rediscover the heritage amongst the new, and a love for the inspired.
There is melancholy in change, and contentment in the unchanging. Ephemerality exists, it is the undertow of our Singaporean current. As a Singaporean millennial; as much as that is a buzzword, we have seen everything, and yet we have seen nothing. Our world is constantly reconstructed and then deconstructed; concrete that has never been concrete. As such, the concept of photography has sprung up fervently among us, in a bid to capture the escaped. The fleetingness of transiency, is what empowers our desire to capture every moment. It is not about living in the past but rather, breathing in the now; that one moment in moving time.
Among the freshly set concrete and polished glass lie the Goliaths who have lived through the times. The ancients in a land of contemporary. Steeped in heritage, they sit akin to an old oak, smiling at their investments. In the midst of newly mined gems, it is easy to forget and look past the ones who were always there. However easily forgettable, they have not been forgotten. The idea of change has amplified their grace and presence, standing ever so grandly, if not more.
The vision of development we have adopted speaks out in the instability of roots, the heartbeat jumps to the next ‘shiny’ thing. Albeit nostalgic, it is the sheen and sparkle of the new that excites us. For what good is change, if there is no change. What use is sacrifice of the vintaged, if not for the birth of the inspired.
