How I Got Into Photography
Hi everyone, my name is John, and in all 18 years of my life, I’ve been living in this amazing city that is Singapore. Fun fact: Singapore is also known for having some of the most beautifully and intricately designed buildings in the world.
I’ve always had a passion for photography but I couldn’t afford a DSLR camera, so passion drove me to start shooting with my iPhone 6s. I’ve always thought that my iPhone taken shots were sub-par as the quality was nowhere near that of DSLR shots.
One day, I stumbled onto a random photographer’s Instagram account. His feed was made up entirely of colourful minimalistic tiles, it was incredibly aesthetic. However, what made my jaw drop was when I found out that all his shots were taken with only an iPhone! My first thought was, “How can this be possible?!”
Shooting With Mobile Phones
One of the most common iPhone photography misconceptions are that iPhones can’t be used for serious photography. While DSLR cameras are superior, the quality of a photo also depends on the photographer’s intent and creative vision.
With the right knowledge and the right technique, you can use your iPhone to take photos so beautiful that nobody would even believe that they were taken with an iPhone.
“Singapore is so boring … There’s nothing to see here. I wish I could go overseas”.
I always hear locals say something like this every now and then. I think it is a pity that the amazing architecture in Singapore has not been appreciated as much as it should be, aside from the occasional passing glance. Singapore has a wide variety of buildings, from towering skyscrapers to monolithic apartment blocks to old structures preserved from the Colonial era.
City Scape Reflections
One early Saturday morning, I decided to wake up early, and head down to Bayfront to catch the sunrise.
What greeted me was a view that has always managed to take me aback.
The reflections of tall skyscrapers and the calm waters of the art science museum – this is a Singapore postcard coming to life. This view is one of the reasons why people are drawn to our country’s allure.
I saw it; I understood it.
Let’s Be Creative Everyone
Nowadays, there are a lot of photographers all around the world. Most photographers like shooting the same common things like architecture, portraits, landscape etc. Why not be unique? Be creative, be special, and be different! Add different kinds of objects to your shots, shoot with different perspective/angle, let your imagination flow. Photography is all about using your imagination, it’s about creating ideas that speak to people and creating interest from a viewer’s standpoint.
One of my favourite quotes:
“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”
― Albert Einstein
Inspiration / Meeting New People
One of the awesome things about photography is that you can easily make friends with other who share that same interest. Having common goals and interests, results in many impromptu shoots, exploring, exchanging of tips and shared learning as photographers. I have met many talented photographers, and it’s kind of crazy how Instagram can bring people together. Some of the people that inspire me are: Yafiq @_yafiqyusman_, Jeryl @J9ryl, and Jason @Jsnjnr. You may not believe it, but most of their photos were taken with just an iPhone.
